Marcelo Gurgel do Amaral Silva, Ph.D. - Brazil

Colonel Marcelo Gurgel do Amaral Silva, of the Brazilian Army, was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He has a bachelor’s degree in Military Science from Academia Militar das Agulhas Negras (AMAN), Resende, Brazil and in Physical Education from Escola de Educação Física do Exército, Rio de Janeiro. He did graduate studies in Pedagogy in Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, a Master of Science in Inter-American Defense and Security in the Inter-American Defense College, Washington D.C., and a Ph.D. in Military Science in the Escola de Comando e Estado-Maior do Exército, Rio de Janeiro.

 

Col Gurgel is a professor at the Inter-American Defense College’s faculty. Core academic courses developed and taught at IADC include: Forecasting Methodology; Study Trip – NY City; World Situation Conference and Geopolitical Assessment of World Regions; Western Hemispheric Situation Conference and Forecasting of Sub-Regional Security, Defense, and Development; and Country Study.

 

Col Gurgel was twice an instructor at AMAN; the second time he was Commander of the Field Artillery Course. He attended the Field Artillery Captains Career Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where he was awarded with the distinction of Master War-Fighter. He was instructor at the Captain’s Advanced Training School of the Brazilian Army. He deployed to two United Nations missions: the first to the Ivory Coast, as an Information Analyst, and the second to Haiti, as Chief of Operations (U3 Chief) of MINUSTAH. Moreover, he was Commander of 5th Field Artillery Battalion in Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil.

 

He was the President of IADC Class 56, where he completed his Master Degree with Excellence and Distinction.

 

He is the recipient of the following awards and decorations: Order of Military Merit, Grade Knight; Gold Medal (30-year Service); Pacifier Medal (Merit on duty); Marshal Hermes Gold Silver with Two Crowns Medal (1st in class in Graduation and Staff College); Amazonic Service Bronze Medal; Golden Command Badge; Medal of Merit Tamandaré (Brazilian Navy); UN Medal MINUSTAH (Haiti); UN Medal UNOCI (Ivory Coast); Star Medal of the Armed Forces (Ecuador); Goddess Minerva Medal (Chile); Francisco José de Caldas Application Medal (Colombia); Academic Medal of the Peruvian Army; 18th May 1811, 3rd Degree Medal (Uruguay); Academic Merit Medal of Honor (Paraguayan Army); and Reward of Merit and Military Brotherhood Medal (Argentina).
